Porcelain Dental Crowns - Frequently Asked Questions
Dental crowns may be the best solution to a number of dental problems. The best way to find out is consulting with your dentist. The following are answers to some of the frequently asked questions about dental crowns.
Are dental crowns for appearance or to make teeth stronger?
Both. Porcelain dental crowns can cover stained or misshapen teeth. They can also protect weak teeth.
What care does a dental crown need?
A dental crown needs the same care as a natural tooth: daily or twice daily brushing and flossing, and regular visits to the dentist.
How long do dental crowns last?
Five to fifteen years, depending on the care they receive.
Do crowns ever come loose?
If the cement washes out from under the crown, the crown can become loose. If there’s not enough cement or the crown does not fit properly, it may fall off. If your crown comes loose or falls off, contact your cosmetic dentist as soon as possible.
Can crowns become chipped?
Porcelain crowns sometimes chip. Dentists can repair small chips with porcelain resin. If there’s a lot of chipping, the dentist may have to replace the crown
What are crowns made of?
Metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic.
What’s a temporary crown?
A temporary crown is a stainless steel or ceramic crown the dentist puts over a tooth until the permanent crown is ready.
How many dental visits does a crown take?
Usually two. In the first visit the dentist examines the tooth and places a temporary crown. The dentist also makes an impression and sends it to a dental laboratory, which makes the permanent crown. Two to three weeks later, when the crown comes back from the lab, the dentist cements the permanent crown in place. Under certain circumstances the dentist may recommend a root canal treatment before making and placing the crown, which means the process will take longer.
