What Is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, connects the lower jaw to the skull. While the exact causes of TMJ disorder are unknown, it is believed to be the result of problems relating to an imbalanced bite and facial muscle, jaw, or jaw joint issues. Among the possible causes of TMJ problems is whiplash (such as from a car accident) or other injuries to the jaw, head, or neck; grinding of the teeth, which can apply pressure to the joint; arthritis; and stress, which can cause the clenching of muscles. The temporomandibular joint is located in front of the ear on either side of the face. The muscles surrounding the joint control its movement.
